Why is the clockwise direction in a clockwise direction?

Ever wondered why clocks go in a certain direction?

There's actually a reason for this!

Clocks were first made in the northern hemisphere where the sundial goes in the direction we now call clockwise direction. Hence, when they made clocks, they made it so that the needle would follow the direction of the shadow of the sundial.

So... if our clocks had been made in the southern hemisphere, they would probably move in the other direction!
